Three days ago, the hotel staff irritated me by blocking off the route I normally use to get into the parking garage. Two days ago, they started setting up tents in the parking lot. Yesterday, my way out of the parking lot was blocked by three car carriers. This morning, I discovered all the cars had been unloaded and parked in/around the tents. The signs told the story - VW is holding a press event at my hotel today. If it’s still up when I get off work, I’m going to crash the party!
[Update] Despite leaving the office early so I could crash the event, I missed it. I did, however, discover what it was all about. It wasn’t a press conference, it was a training session. From the signs, the stickers on the cars, and the whiteboards they left behind, it looks like corporate was there to teach the locals (sales managers, salesmen, who knows who else) all about their 2019 lineup and how they compare to the competition.
What I found most amusing was the whiteboards. Top Reasons to Buy a Corolla? How about a bunch of responses to Toyota’s claims?
I wasn’t able to get much before the security guard caught up with me. He was nice enough to let me grab a free bottle of water and a couple of leftover cookies, so I’ll try to keep him out of trouble. He did his job, I was just faster than he was and made my entrance from the back of the lot.
That explains why they had a Corolla and a Civic mixed in with the flotilla of Jettas.

Beats me. I was trying to navigate the parking lot. I didn’t have a chance to gawk. They had lots of comparison signs - Jetta vs Civic, etc.

Crashing isn’t gaining credentials. Attempting the front door does eliminate the chance of just wandering in and schmoozing your way to parting prizes.

I don’t think I’ll have much trouble getting through the gates. They are, after all, invading the hotel at which I’ve been staying for literally two months. Parting prizes is a different ball game. I don’t expect much success on that front. Maybe they’ll give me something to just leave. Perhaps I can walk in as a writer for Oppo. :)

Those new Jettas look a whole lot like A3s

It isn’t unheard of to just get handed a packet or whatever based on obvious shared interest. Especially if they see you around before anyone else it gets easy to think you belong. Just saying. ;)

First Question: “So, which of the VW lineup would make an adequate replacement for my aging WRX?” That should at least get them talking. Maybe if I pull the Challenger around, they can do the same side-by-side comparisons they are doing with the Civic and Corolla.

Play it however you see fit. I was making light of strolling right in like you belong. Throwing out enthusiast lines about other brands you own might not be the ideal way to blend in with bland corporate types incapable of making a firm statement about anything not in their current literature.

Shocking news, the new Jetta is better than the old Corolla.

Nissan does these from time to time at a place along my route to work. They open it up to the public on the weekends. I got to thrash a couple of new Titans there last year.

Shame. It would have been epic if you could have discreetly pulled up a chair, sat down, and started snoring, loudly.

I had a chance to drive an Eclipse at a similar event, but we were limited to one lap around the cones. The course was so small we couldn’t get it out of first gear. Lame.

Lame indeed. I gotta hand it to Nissan. I really got to flog those trucks pretty good and proper. I came away willing to consider buying one, when the time comes for a new truck.
